What counts as long distance from Shepparton
Anything beyond the Goulburn Valley region is what we treat as long distance. Practically that means runs to Melbourne, Bendigo, Albury and Wodonga, Wagga Wagga, Sydney, Adelaide, and the various coastal and alpine destinations along those corridors. The job changes character once you cross past the immediate region because pricing moves from an hourly model to a fixed price model and the planning effort goes up significantly.
Shepparton sits at the intersection of the Goulburn Valley Highway, the Midland Highway and the Murray Valley Highway, which makes it a natural staging point for long distance work in any direction. The Hume Freeway is half an hour away at Seymour, the Calder Freeway is reachable through Bendigo, the Western Highway is reachable through Ballarat. From a logistics point of view, Shepparton is well placed for the rest of the country.
How fixed price quoting works
Long distance quotes are fixed once we have the pickup point, the destination and the vehicle. The figure includes the driver, the truck, the fuel, the tolls where applicable, the insurance, and the return trip back to Shepparton if the truck is coming back empty. There are no surprise charges added at the destination unless something changes from the description on the call.
What can change a fixed quote is a vehicle that turns out to be larger or heavier than described, a pickup location that turns out to be inaccessible, or a destination that turns out to be different from the one quoted. None of these are common. Honest descriptions on the call mean honest pricing on the destination.
The most common routes from Shepparton
Shepparton to Melbourne is our most frequent long distance run. The Goulburn Valley Highway drops down to the Hume Freeway at Seymour and into Melbourne is roughly two hours. Common reasons are dealership transfers, auction pickups, insurance recoveries and private vehicle deliveries. Shepparton to Bendigo on the Midland Highway is around 80 minutes and runs regularly for trade and private work.
Shepparton to Albury and Wodonga is roughly 90 minutes via the Goulburn Valley Highway and the Hume Freeway. Shepparton to Wagga Wagga is around two and a half hours via Albury and the Olympic Highway. Shepparton to Sydney sits at about eight to nine hours of driving and is a full day job. Shepparton to Adelaide via Mildura is a full day plus and is quoted as a multi day arrangement.
How vehicles are secured for long distance
Long distance work demands more attention to securing because the load is on the deck for hours rather than minutes. The vehicle is loaded square on the deck with no overhang. Wheels are chocked. Soft straps run over the alloys rather than around the chassis. Bonnet and boot are checked closed. Antennae and roof racks are checked. Tyre pressures are noted at the start and verified at any planned stop. The load is visually checked at every fuel stop and any rest break.
For high value vehicles, prestige cars and electric vehicles, the loading procedure is more conservative. EVs go on the deck in transport mode where the manufacturer allows it. Prestige cars get rubber contact protection on any surface that touches a strap. Classic cars use original tie down points where they exist.
Paperwork and documentation
Every long distance job comes with documentation. Pickup confirmation with photos of the vehicle on the deck and the existing condition noted. Tax invoice with the agreed price and the date. Destination confirmation with photos at the drop point. For insurance work we provide additional documentation to suit the insurer's claim format. For dealership and auction transfers we follow the standard handover process the receiving party uses.
Carry your registration papers when you book a long distance move and have the keys ready at pickup. If the vehicle is unregistered or the rego has lapsed, tell us on the call. Towing an unregistered vehicle on the deck is fine, but the receiving repairer or buyer often needs the paperwork to release the vehicle off our truck at the other end.
Can you ride in the cab
On a long distance run, sometimes yes. Australian heavy vehicle rules allow a passenger in the cab provided the driver is comfortable and the journey suits the arrangement. On overnight jobs or jobs over a certain length we will let you know on the call whether riding along is workable. Most clients arrange their own travel because the truck stops several times for fuel, breaks and load checks, which is rarely a passenger friendly schedule.
Child seats follow normal road rules. If you need to bring children, plan to follow in your own vehicle or use public transport. Trains run between Shepparton and Melbourne on the Albury V Line and several daily services connect through Seymour.
Insurance considerations
Our truck is insured to carry the vehicle. Your own insurance still applies to the vehicle for any incident that is not caused by our transport process. If a stone chip hits the windscreen on the Hume, your comprehensive insurance covers it. If the vehicle is damaged during our loading or unloading, our transport insurance covers it. Tell your insurer that the vehicle is being moved on a flatbed if they ask, and confirm any cover gaps before the truck rolls.
For insurance jobs being moved to a repairer on the other side of the state, the insurer often nominates a preferred carrier. Confirm with your claim handler before you book. We work with most major insurers and provide the paperwork they require.
